You
obtain a domain
(URL) by purchasing
rights to the domain
(if the
domain is available)
through a registrar for a certain length of time (at least one year).
Registration costs
vary according to
the registrar and
duration (in years). Typically,
costs do not exceed
$35
for a one-year registration. You can check availability of a domain by conducting an
online
search through a
registrar. DPH-IT

Network Solutions http://www.networksolutions.com for
processing most domain

with procurement
of the domain

Additional Web Sites
- I
received a piece of SPAM
with an attachment --
should
I open the attachment?
It
is strongly advised you
DO NOT open
the attachment. The attachment
may contain
a virus, or some other
malware that could compromise
the security
of your system and/or the network. If you suspect you have received a piece
of email that could harm
systems operations, as
opposed to a regular
harmless (though
annoying) piece of SPAM,
please contact your LAN
Support
Team. DO NOT forward the attachment
until asked to do so.
If you have received
a piece of SPAM you are
quite sure is harmless
and want to report the
offending piece of email,
please refer to the following
question.
- How do I manage and reduce spam? Where/how do
I report spam?
To manage spam, you need to use a combination of junk e-mail filtering and reporting.
To reduce spam, use these tips from ITS. Spam bots can forge their source (sender and/or domain). For instance, the apparent sender may never be the same. Thus, you may block a sender and later receive the same piece of spam from another sender, both originating from the same bot.
Yes, your Junk E-mail filter can help and if a sender is blocked through web mail the action will also report the email to ITS.
However, if you're using Outlook's Junk E-mail filter on the desktop version of Outlook, then blocking a sender does not generate a report to ITS. Therefore, if you're using Outlook on the desktop you may also want to report spam to ITS (see below).
To report spam, follow the instructions at https://www.ncmail.net/spaminformation.htm.
Addendum to ITS's instructions: If reporting spam from the desktop, please note you must copy/paste message headers into a new email. The procedures for copying
message headers vary
depending on your email
client. Please refer
to the "Help" section
of your email client
for information on
how
to copy message headers.
For example, if
you are using Microsoft
Outlook 2003:
- To view headers
in Outlook,
you must first open
a message (i.e., piece of spam).
- In the open message (not the main Outlook menu), click the View
menu, then click
Options.
- Message Header
information
should appear in
the Message Options dialog box in the Internet
headers
field (at the bottom of the dialog). Click in the box/field. Select and copy everything in the box: press Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C or select and drag down and Ctrl+C to copy. Close the dialog box.
- Paste
the header information into
the body
of a
new email with a subject line of "spam". (Don't forget to also
select
and copy
all of the
text in the
actual body of
the piece
of spam and
paste
it into the
body
of
the same new
email.)
- Where
can I find documentation
on HIPAA compliance?
HIPAA
information is available
at the following web site: http://www.schs.state.nc.us/hipaa/.
- What can I do to protect myself from ID theft?
Learn more at www.noscamnc.gov, an ID theft prevention, mitigation, and recovery resource from the North Carolina Department of Justice.
