This annual conference provides a unique opportunity
for local and state public health leaders to convene
around
public health issues of strategic interest. The importance
of the 2005 conference was underscored by a number
of emerging public health issues: the emerging and
critically important field of risk communication,
the continuing need to improve the level of public
health emergency preparedness and response, and the
developing epidemic of obesity. As in previous years,
the 2005 conference was designed to support
capacity development and skill building as well as
to stimulate thoughtful discussion and planning.
Featured
speakers included Secretary John Agwunobi, Florida
Department of Health, who gave the keynote address;
Vincent Covello, President, Center for Risk Communication;
Dr. Leah
Devlin, State Health Director, presenting the annual
public health "State of the State" address;
Secretary Carmen Hooker Odom, North Carolina
Department of Health and Human Services, who gave
an update on the upcoming long session of the North
Carolina General Assembly; Marcus Plescia, Chief
of the Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention Section
at the Division of Public
Health, who discussed the state’s approach
to obesity.
