Buncombe County Health Director George
F. Bond, Jr., and Robeson County Health Director William
J. (Bill) Smith, IV, were each awarded the Ronald H.
Levine Legacy Award for Public Health at the 2006
State Health Director's Conference.
With the annual Ronald H. Levine Legacy Award for
Public Health, the division seeks to honor individuals
whose life work on behalf of the public’s health
has resulted in significant, sustainable and positive
improvements in North Carolina’s public health system.
The award recognizes the work of Ronald H. Levine,
M.D., as the embodiment
of these criteria and commemorates his service and
dedication to the wellbeing of North
Carolinians during his distinguished tenure as
State Health Director, 1981-1998.
The person honored with the
Legacy Award will have a distinguished record of
achievement in
one or more of the following areas:
- Expanding
the scope and impact of public health services
and programs;
- Significantly improving public health
systems, capacity or infrastructure;
- Enhancing
public health capacity through policy development
or collaboration with
the private sector;
- Improving the public’s
health through the creation of sustained partnerships;
and/or
- Fostering public health improvement
through sound science and research.
In
order to be considered for this award, the nominated individual’s contribution
in one or
more of these areas must have been sustained and significant.
CRITERIA FOR JUDGING
To be eligible for the Legacy
Award, the nominated individual must have been:
- Active in the practice of
public health for a period of not less than 10
years;
or,
-
In a position to directly influence
or guide public health systems change with regard
to the
body of public health work under consideration;
or,
-
Successful in making an enduring contribution
to North Carolina’s state and local public health
system.
Nominations are not limited
to state and local public health staff.
The Legacy
Award Committee, comprised of a member of the Division
of Public Health Management Team,
a local health director, and a member of the
public health practice community, reviews the
nominations. Of the eligible individuals nominated
for recognition, the Legacy Award Committee
recommends to the State Health Director at least
three individuals
who best meet the stated criteria. The State
Health Director then makes the final decision.
AWARD
ANNOUNCEMENT
Recipients of the Legacy Award are honored with
a special, commemorative gift and the winner’s name
is entered on a permanent plaque to be displayed
outside the Office of the State Health Director.
Legacy Award winners are also given a lifetime complimentary
registration to the annual health director’s conference.
